What competence means now

The Building Safety Act made competence a legal question. For anyone doing design or building work in England, it means four things: skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours. The industry shorthand is SKEB.

Training covers the first two, and the format matters. An online course helps you evidence knowledge. A practical course evidences knowledge and skills, because you're assessed in person doing the work. No course can give you experience, and nobody honest will tell you otherwise. What it gives you is a dated, assessed record of what you've learned and proved, which is the first thing a client or regulator asks for.

What every course includes

  • Clear outcomes

Each course page lists what you'll be able to do by the end.

  • A proper assessment

Resits are included in the price, up to the limit shown on the course.

  • A certificate anyone can check

It carries a unique reference, the date and when it's due for renewal.

  • A reminder before it lapses

We tell you before your certificate is due for renewal.

  • A person to talk to

Call 01902 931 101 if you get stuck.

Check a certificate yourself

Don't take our word for it. Every certificate we issue can be checked on our verification page. It shows the course, the date and whether the certificate is still current, withdrawn or replaced.

As printed on the certificate, for example UKFST-2026-ABCD2345.

If something isn't right

Tell us. Call 01902 931 101 or use the contact form and a person will deal with it. Our cancellation policy sets out exactly what happens if you need to cancel or move a booking.

To confirm before launch

Our promise if a course turns out not to be right for you, for example a free transfer to another course before you start, or a refund within a set period. Only what we'll honour every time.

Questions people ask before they book

Not unless the course page says so. Most of our certificates record that you completed or attended a course and passed its assessment. Where a course leads to a regulated qualification, the course page names the awarding body.

They can check it themselves, online, using the reference on the certificate. If a contract asks for a specific standard or approval, call us before you book and we'll tell you straight whether the course meets it.

On its own, no, and we won't pretend otherwise. An online course gives you assessed knowledge. A practical course gives you assessed knowledge and skills. Experience and behaviours come from doing the work. Together they're what the Building Safety Act means by competence.
