Fire safety training for care homes

In a care home, most residents can't get themselves out, so the building has to hold a fire back while staff move people. That puts more weight on the doors, the detection and the compartment walls than almost anywhere else. These courses are for the people who install, inspect and look after them.

What's different in care homes

  1. 01

    Evacuation is sideways, and slow

Most homes plan to move residents through fire doors into the next compartment rather than out of the building. If a door doesn't close or a compartment wall has a hole in it, that plan fails.

  2. 02

Doors are held open all day

Residents need clear routes, so fire doors are often on hold-open devices or free-swing closers linked to the alarm. Every one has to release and close fully when the alarm sounds.

  3. 03

    Detection is usually throughout

Care homes normally have automatic detection in every room, so faults and false alarms get noticed fast. Engineers need to understand the cause and effect, not just the panel.

  4. 04

    The building never closes

Work happens around residents, often at night. Permits, isolations and putting systems back into service properly matter more here than in most buildings.
